Advances In Chronic Pain Control

In the past chronic pain was simply something which people had to learn to deal with. Modern medicine has brought about several advanced pain control techniques to the forefront concerning the treatment of chronic pain. These processes have brought about a greater understanding of how the body works in response to damage.

When your body is damaged either through disease or an injury you feel pain. This pain is caused by the neurotransmitters within your brain which deliver various messages throughout the brain concerning the condition of your body. Many of the new medications work through a process of interfering with your body's natural response to damage and interrupting this flow of pain messages headed to your brain.

Your doctor may possibly prescribe an antidepressant for your chronic pain since those medicines tend to help reduce the pain messages being sent by the neurotransmitters. The new antidepressants are safe to use and will not interfere with your normal flow of life by causing you to be overly tired. While most of us think of medications as a pill which needs to be taken every four to six hours, there have been some medical advances which allow you to effectively control your pain and come in the form of a cream or even a patch. These medicines are a combination of various medications but often include an anti-inflammatory as well as a pain killing agent.

Traditional narcotics are also used to control pain but are often only used in conditions that are long term. Arthritis and even degenerative diseases are treated through the use of traditional medications. Newer synthetic narcotics offer the same pain relief of the traditional narcotic but without the additional risk of medical addiction.

One interesting and effective new method of pain relief uses heat to relieve pain in a specific area for up to six months. This new method is called radiofrequency ablation and is performed by the insertion of a small needle into the tissue which needs to be treated. Heat is applied to the tissue through the use of an electrical current that is produced through a radio wave. Electrical impulses are used extensively in several of the newer methods of pain control and are even used to stimulate small implants into the patient's spinal cord. These pain controlling pacemakers work by producing a small electrical impulse that blocks the pain signal.

No matter which type of pain control treatments you may use you can learn how to deal with your pain through the process of stress management.
